SOARinG Summer Research
Student Opportunities for Academic Achievement Through Research in Greenville (SOARinG) connects medical students with faculty mentors across the Prisma Health Sciences Center, including the University of South Carolina, Clemson University, Furman University, and Prisma Health.
Through a six- to eight-week summer research experience between the M1 and M2 years, students work alongside faculty mentors to develop research skills and contribute to biomedical, clinical, or educational research.
The program also includes a seminar series and journal club to prepare students to present their work at the School of Medicine Greenville's annual Student Research Symposium. Rising M2 students showcase their research through poster presentations or oral presentations while engaging with faculty mentors and peers.
Eligibility: Medical students who have completed one semester and are in good academic and professional standing are eligible to participate.
Mentorship: Students work with a faculty research mentor. Participants may identify their own mentor or connect with the Office of Research to explore available opportunities.
Program Requirements: Before beginning a project, students must contact the School
of Medicine Greenville Research and Regulatory Coordinator and complete all required
USC CITI training and IRB registration. At the conclusion of the program, participants
submit a brief summary of their research findings and complete a program evaluation
survey.
Summer Research FAQ's
SOARinG is the umbrella program for all summer student research at SOMG. This program began in the summer of 2021 for students between M1 and M2 years. SOARinG covers all research throughout the Health Sciences Center (SOMG, Prisma, Clemson, Furman, UofSC Arnold School). Students in SOARinG are expected to attend the summer research seminar series and submit an abstract to the annual research symposium at the end of the summer.
The Scholars Fellowships and the M2 Research Elective are housed within the SOARinG
umbrella program.
Scholars are selected based on a competitive application process and those selected
receive a summer stipend along with several additional requirements of the fellowship.
The M2 Research Elective is the mechanism for listing research on your school transcript. You must register for the elective in order for your participation in summer research to be listed on your transcript.
Yes, we welcome all rising M2s who conducted research during the summer after M1 to submit an abstract for presentation at the symposium.
Yes, we welcome abstracts that describe “works-in-progress” so please do not hesitate to submit an abstract that lack a complete data set or final conclusion.
The Office of Medical Student Research will announce a call for abstracts in the Student Newsletter in June along with a link to upload the abstracts. The deadline for abstract submission will be in early July.
