Bio
Background: | Over the last 13 years, I have been a practicing pediatric hematologist/oncologist with a wide variety of duties including division administration, clinical care, student/resident education, and clinical research through the Children’s Oncology Group. Additionally, I have gained specific expertise in global health and the care of vulnerable populations through short and long-term work in Africa. As part of this focus, I spent 2 years (2015-2017) working as the Director of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana through the Global HOPE program of Baylor College of Medicine. I returned to Greenville, SC in August 2017 in order to focus on improving the care of patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). As director of the Comprehensive SCD Program of Prisma Health-Upstate, I am focused on providing standardized, cutting-edge care for children and adults with SCD in the Upstate of South Carolina. This program is unique in our area in that it provides care for patients of all ages in one location and with one dedicated clinical team. Transition of patients from pediatric to adult care is one of our main areas of initial quality improvement as this is known to be a high risk time in the care of patients with all types of chronic disease. As a clinical site of the PCORI ST3P-UP grant, we are implementing a standardized model of transition education and peer mentoring into our program in hopes of improving the care of patients in our area. We are one of only 24 programs around the country who are participating in the American Society of Hematology SCD Clinical Trials Network. This collaborative network will bring cutting edge SCD-specific research to patients in our area. We work closely with our community-based organization, L.D. Barksdale Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation, to provide patient/family support and to connect mentors with patients in the transitional care program. We are also involved in building community awareness through partnerships with other key stakeholders including the Greenville Branch of the NAACP, The Blood Connection, and the Greenville Black Caucus of Elected Officials. I believe that the education of medical providers and ancillary staff about SCD is crucial to improving the care of patients in our area and ultimately in combating the stigma associated with this debilitating illness. |
