Bio
Background: | January 25, 2022 Annoucnement: I am happy to announce that after a rigorous national search, Dr. Phyllis MacGilvray has been selected as the next University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. In her new role, Dr. MacGilvray will supervise all aspects of undergraduate medical education, guide strategic planning, and oversee our strategic initiatives.A South Carolina native from Abbeville, Dr. MacGilvray earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Clemson University and her Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. Her professional journey moved rapidly from that point, enjoying multiple moves courtesy of her husband serving in the U.S. Navy, while maintaining an upward academic leadership trajectory. Dr. MacGilvray completed residency training in Family Medicine at the University of Vermont, followed by leadership positions at Eastern Virginia Medical School serving as Family Medicine-Obstetrics division lead, at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune serving as the Family Medicine Residency Program Director and the Designated Institutional Official for Graduate Medical Education, and at the University of Texas San Antonio as Vice Chair of Family Medicine for Medical Student Education. After returning home to South Carolina and starting with Prisma Health in 2018 as Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Family Medicine, Dr. MacGilvray was then selected as the Department Chair in 2020. Over the past four years, she led the development of two new graduate medical education programs which tripled the number of Family Medicine residency positions at Prisma. During the pandemic, her leadership of thirty primary care clinics raised morale and yielded the highest levels of recruitment and retention, improved quality clinical outcomes, and increased clinic operational efficiencies. As an active leader for the Primary Care Service Line, Dr. MacGilvray advocated for new resources and support for primary care delivery to underserved patients across the upstate. For our medical school, she facilitates students in the Integration of the Practice of Medicine course and teaches in her primary care clinic during their clerkship rotation. We are fortunate to have recruited Dr. MacGilvray for this pivotal leadership role. For the past 20 years, she has maintained a full-scope Family Medicine practice including obstetrics. Her long record of exceptional leadership, motivation for growing a culture of excellence, and passion for medical student education are perfectly matched for success as the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Dr. MacGilvray will lead our strategic initiatives such as the Primary Care Accelerated Track, support and engage our medical students, mentor faculty and junior leaders, and promote a culture of diversity and inclusion to serve our community. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary this year and launch major strategic initiatives to build a better state of health for South Carolina into the next decade, the future of the SOMG is very bright indeed and our new Senior Associate Dean has the talent and the skills to help build our shared vision and ensure success. Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Dr. MacGilvray to her new role! |
